Koumac Departure Sunday with a quick stop at the ranch where Camille.
We planted our tent at a campsite a little expensive (2000Fr, 17 euros) but close to the marina where it is the diving club "blue dream" where we had an appointment the next morning.
Monday, October 11, 2010
We went snorkeling on the reef Koumac with David, the dive instructor of the club.
The first dive deep (38m), was held in the pass with the goal of seeing "the big" tuna, English mackerel, sharks, etc.. And we were not disappointed! We crossed Tuna "dog teeth", a manta ray and many sharks including a shark albimarginatus, a first for us. The shark is Ablimarginatus a white tip shark different from those usually encountered in the lagoon. Much more massive and bigger, it can easily reach 3m and has a very troubling behavior. Indeed, as we're used to seeing sharks flee or be indifferent to our approach, shark albimarginatus is much more curious and approached close enough (2 meters) before abruptly turning around. It's pretty impressive especially if one says that the specimen that we crossed was about 2.5 meters.
The wind rose, and the second dive took place in a slightly more sheltered. We are also back in the rain and wind.
We then folded the tent and headed to Poingam in the extreme north of the mainland where the road gives way to dirt tracks. We arrived at the campsite Delightful "Poingam relay" in the late afternoon. The winds have stopped growing and it is with a strong wind that we got up the next day!

We then took the road towards the east or we agreed to relay "Ouane Batch", a lodging-camping very pretty. The force of wind but we discouraged our tent and we decided to sleep in their cabin.

The wind had calmed and the sun was a huge income. We spent the morning in the cascade of Colnett (we had never seen) and the cascade of Tao before stopping to eat at snack cascades (delicious). We then resumed the road to beautiful Hienghène, taking the tray of the Ouaïème and sublime road of the cornice.

Two and a half hours later (Hendrix is talkative and not stingy!), Back to the tribe, we took the road to the campsite to eat and take the tent. We then took the road towards Poindimié where we decided to live in an unpretentious small hotel but very clean "the hotel from the beach" in front of the club plunged "Tiete Diving" where we will dive the next day.

And it has not failed, the seabed is really beautiful: between falling arches and filled with gorgonians, nudibranchs and other marine worms, the dives were also punctuated by a shark or two.
nice point of this club plunged, the instructor who accompanied us (that either PMT during baptisms or exploration) is equipped with a camera. He then proposed purchase (1000Fr) photos taken during the dives of the day.
We then hit the road, without knowing if we were going to spend one last night Canala or down directly on Noumea. We therefore decided to continue our journey on the East Coast to canals with the road passing in the middle of the awesome wealth of Poro.
Once Canala, we preferred to return to Noumea to enjoy this last "real" weekend before my departure to the crates and prepare for the move.

Julien: We took the morning to do a walk around the explanatory and marked "Relay Poingam" allowing us to learn more about the flora the region, to admire the landscape height and crossing some wild horses roam the hills nearby.

After many photo stops and a short stop at Hienghène ("city" includes only main street), we decided to pitching our tent in the camping club Babou dive in the sea After a bit of relaxation and a walk on the beach, we met Nolwen (not Olwen, currently in New Zealand), a Breton who came to join her boyfriend in New Caledonia., and spent the evening with her around the fire!

We had taken the day before an appointment with Hendrix, a resident of a neighboring tribe Warap for a ride on horseback an hour (a first for me) in the chain . Once there and the horses saddled, so we left we walk to three in the vicinity of the tribe. Hendrix took the opportunity to punctuate the trek by explanations of local flora and use that make Kanak.

The rendezvous diving club was held at 7:15! But the hotel is located at 200m, we are left only 5 minutes earlier. Our divemaster companion (we were only 3) was an Australian from Brisbane who had accompanied his wife on a mission to New Caledonia. We dived, as usual, at two different sites. Unlike Koumac, located on the east coast, east coast sites (Hienghène and Poindimié) is most famous for the architecture of the seabed (arches, faults, caves ...) and macroscopic fauna.
And it has not failed, the seabed is really beautiful: between falling arches and filled with gorgonians, nudibranchs and other marine worms, the dives were also punctuated by a shark or two.

Festival Femmes Funk (10/09/2010)
women funk festival lasts three days and is held annually in October in Noumea and the bush. Quite rare in New Caledonia, this kind of cultural event in the habit of gathering crowds. The festival funk women, organized by the association Towanda Prod. A particular object of artistic exchange and promotion of local culture.
We went there late Saturday afternoon and had the opportunity to attend the concert Ykson, a local artist originally from Lifu. Between reggae, blues and rock, this young artist should release an album Caledonian in the coming months.

We were mostly from that day to see Grace, headline the day. The American singer of soul, accompanied by excellent musicians, managed to put a warm atmosphere for more than 1:30.

2 years already !!!!!
Julien: That exactly two years since we arrived in New Caledonia. On October 8, 2008, in fact, we landed with our luggage bag for only ... That way since then!
Adventure Caledonian is unfortunately about to end for us. Having still not found work since the end of my CDD in March, we are forced to leave the Territory.
New adventures await us then. I took off indeed to Perth (Australia) in two weeks to try to find a job, and failing, to visit the subcontinent. Julie quit her job and join me for Christmas. We left the apartment shortly, Julie is having a roommate for the two months left before leaving the Rock.
Meanwhile, we leave this Sunday for a week of vacation. We will around the main island to enjoy the last time the beautiful scenery Caledonian we will take you through the blog.
We hope that after two years, you are always many of us read. Thank you all!
A new blog you can follow our journey in Australia is already in preparation, we will discuss in due course.

Dives and baptisms au Phare Amédée (01.10.2010)
We took advantage of the presence of the parents of Julie, who wanted to make a christening, to spend a day at the Amedee Lighthouse. The deal was simple, in addition to our usual two dives, we would assist parents in their water for half an hour of initiation.
After a good half hour of the zodiac, we took Amedee or we prepared for the first dive. We went on a wreck, a huge fishing boat sank voluntarily a few years ago. Nothing really outstanding if not the size of the boat, many scorpion and cleaner shrimp.
Back on the island, Paul and Christiane boarded for their baptism. It will effect the Amedee Lighthouse Reef, bordering the island. After explanations of safety, we all put into the water. 6m reached the bottom, so you can not go down further. Except one or two unexpected lift from Christiane, everything went well. It was much, much comical to see them underwater, trying somehow to stabilize!
We then returned to the island to eat the wonderful meal concocted by the cook of the club and then moved on to dive on the pass inside Boulari where we have an opportunity to meet quite a few white tip sharks, gray, two turtles, groupers and a moray eel.

Visit Mine Thio (25.9.2010)
Julie Mine Thio, operated by SLN or "Société Le Nickel, is the oldest mine in New Caledonia and is still active. SLN is the oldest mining company in the Territory. Its history is closely linked to that of French colonialism and the beginnings of nickel mining in New Caledonia.
SLN is part of the Eramet group since 1985 and operates several fields in the Great South Land Thio Tiebaghi to the north.
"On 18 May 1880, Jules Garnier, John Higginson and Henry Marbeau Partner, created the company Le Nickel and build a factory that produces Thio matte to 50% nickel. In 1909, the company creates Bordeaux Ballande blast furnaces which opens in 1910 a foundry in Doniambo (Noumea). After a worldwide drop in prices in 1931, the two groups merged under the name metallurgical SLN. "
SLN is part of the Eramet group since 1985 and operates several fields in the Great South Land Thio Tiebaghi to the north.
The Mine Tour organized by the Tourist Office of Thio thus encompasses the visit of the modern mine with ore hundred tonnes carrying, sorting and different sites but also the museum mine Village located in Thio and tracing its history and a meal in one of the tribes of the municipality.
The visit of the mine (mandatory helmet and pants) brought back memories to Julian and Lionel who worked on the Goro site. No big news for them then, nor indeed for me who had lived a few weeks with Julian in Mali!
The meal was held at St Paul of the tribe in which we had already spent a weekend a few months ago. It was therefore an opportunity for us to see Jessica, Anna and others about their delicious cuisine. On the menu: bougna, banane frite, salade de choux kanake, gratin de chouchoute et autres produits locaux.
